The HSE 81 has an impressively high-powered 650W engine, combined with a 28 inch / 70 cm cutting blade with large tooth spacing, making it ideal for thicker branches.
Excellent cutting performance to tackle thicker branches
As well as the extra length provided by the 28 inch / 70 cm cutting blade, the large tooth spacing, high powered 650 watt engine, 2-stage reduction gear with low stroke rate and higher torque combine to make light work of thick branches. The blade itself is laser cut and ground using diamond discs. The hardened cutting edges are extra-resilient and stay sharper, for longer.
Comfortable & easy operation
The 5-position rotary handle with its integral armrest allows for comfortable cutting. You can choose from five settings between 0 and 90 degrees in either direction, and STIHL’s triple switch system also means your working range is increased, so you can get to otherwise difficult-to-reach targets. A transparent hand guard gives you a great view of what you’re cutting, and quiet running makes using the machine a pleasure. The integrated cable strain relief prevents the power cable (0.4 m as standard) from becoming accidentally disconnected during use.

I’ve just finished my first attack on a badly overgrown Leylandii and this trimmer performed very well. I have also bought an up-market, corded pole trimmer which is also really good, but this trimmer cuts through much thicker material with ease. It is large, heavy, well-built, but well balanced which makes it akin to using a light sabre. It is easy to make accurate, neat cuts. The motor is more than powerful enough for anything that will fit into the widely spaced guard ‘fingers’. The trigger and the holding loop switches are a good safety feature and the ability to rotate the handle makes is easy to cut hedge sides in both directions and to do the top, equally easily.
I have two issues with it. First, the cord is too short. The extension cable plug has to dangle near the handle. Second, Stihl require the spraying of a resin dissolving lubricant at the beginning and end of the session. A 300ml spray can costs around £20. The pole trimmer has similar stainless steel blades and does not specify any lubricant. I’ve always lubricated my hedge trimmer blades and so I have used the spray on both machines. It should last quite a long time.
